AbstractDetermining the factors with the highest influence in the origin of floristic patterns in Amazonian areas is troublesome, and this issue has motivated great debates in the international literature. Understanding the sharp contacts between large areas of savanna and rainforest has been of particular interest. In this study, we applied different remote sensing techniques (Landsat, ASTER, JERS-1, MDE-SRTM, high resolution Image GOOGLE) in order to characterize four areas with occurrences of savanna within the Brazilian Amazonia forest. The results revealed an abundance of paleomorphologies chiefly related to fluvial paleochannels, some in association with megafan depositional systems. The dynamics of sediment deposition as these depositional environments became abandoned in the Amazonian landscape during the late Quaternary had strong influence to determine the types of floristic composition. Hence, as active channels became abandoned and filled up to the surface, they became sites favorable for herb growth. However, with increased time of abandonment, this vegetation pattern was progressively replaced by bushlands, woodlands and, then, forest lands, when they become undistinguishable in forested areas. These subtle changes in plant composition in Amazonian areas reflect a set of characteristics of the physical environment, such as topography, lithology, flooding regime, and soil, which are strongly controlled by the geological history related to the evolution of the depositional systems during the late Quaternary.
